Natural Hand Sanitizer

Natural ingredients to stay clean... that's our goal for our new natural hand sanitizer! And after trial runs and many scent tests, we feel we hit our goal;) No hand sanitizer should completely replace good ole fashion hand washing (especially with a natural soap;), but it can be a great solution when your out and about!

It's fairly obvious hand sanitizers are in high demand during these crazy times, so finding a sanitizer without synthetic fragrances or harmful chemicals (i.e. Parabens, Triethanolamine, DMDM hydantoin and petroleum ingredients...) is high on the priority list! Here's the why and what for the ingredients that made it into our natural hand sanitizer!

Our Ingredients

Ethyl Alcohol

Alcohol sterilizes and disinfects, no surprise right? The trick is the dilution percentage...

We use undiluted, 100% ethyl alcohol and dilute it to a 70% concentration in each bottle. That 70% rate is important - a higher percentage rate will evaporate too quickly and not have time to sterilize, but a lower percentage isn't as effective (People's Journal). Ethyl alcohol can dehydrate the skin more than isopropyl alcohol, so to help counteract this, we've added organic aloe vera juice and non-GMO vegetable glycerin!

Distilled Water

So, not much to say on this ingredient... distilled water is the simplest and purest way dilute the alcohol content to the right percentage;)

Aloe Vera Juice (Organic)

It is one of nature's perfect soothing moisturizes! We added it to help counteract some of alcohols drying tendencies.

Non GMO Vegetable Glycerin (Derived from coconuts)

It attracts moisture and acts kind of like a moisturizing seal - which helps keep hands from drying out from alcohol evaporation.

Essential oils: Each of these oils made it into the final product because of their strong antiviral and anti-bacterial properties. And, to be honest, they smelled the best together too! Most of these oils even have extra immunosupportive benefits too!

  • Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globulus

  • Tea Tree, Melaleuca alternifolia

  • Thyme, Thymus vulgaris ct linalool

  • Lime (distilled), Citrus aurantifolia

  • Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamomum zeylanicum

  • Oregano, Origanum vulgare

  • Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus

| Why this blend...

Why so many different oils when just one could do the trick? Our aromatherapists had synergy and sensitization in mind when they created this blend.

Synergy is the term used to describe what happens when you blend essential oils. Basically, it means the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. All these oils when combined together have a greater, more beneficial effect than if they were to be used individually.

The why’s and how’s of synergy are not fully understood; but it has been shown that combining oils produces greater benefits than using each oil individually. Even the individual compounds found in an oil have synergy with each other and produce a greater benefit... sometimes even cancelling out another compound’s unwanted side-effect!

Plus, all those different oils make it harder for your body to get used to the benefits from the oils.

That leads us to our last point...

You might've heard of sensitization in connection with essential oils before. Usually, sensitization happens when your immune system becomes "over-sensitized" to a certain compound or essential oil. Its response is often to develop an allergy (ie skin reaction) or become desensitized.

Desensitization means the effects of the oil won't work as well for you because your body gets "used to" the oil.

Desensitization also works with viruses and bacteria. Just like our bodies, viruses and bacteria can become desensitized and build up immunity against virus and bacteria killers. Plants have a built in remedy for this. No two batches of an essential oil are exactly identical - even if they come from the same exact plant. This ensures the oils always stay effective.

So having lots of different essential oils and making small batches allows us to maximize the sanitizing and germ fighting power and helps prevent sensitive reactions to the oils in our hand sanitizer. Each small batch has natural variations in the compounds and essential oils that keep our hand sanitizer working!
