Use these 4 Ingredients to Spring Clean Your Entire Home: Part 1

With spring just around the corner we're all thinking about giving our homes a good deep clean. But this spring, try out some "clean" cleaners - no need to waste time on expensive and toxic cleaners! Instead try using a few simple ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Check out a previous post here on some of the negative effects of chlorinated cleaners. It's about time we break the association that the smell of bleach = clean... cause it's doing a lot more harm than good to our bodies.

VINEGAR // It’s acidic nature makes it great at breaking down grease and soap scum

Square #1 in diy cleaning - we've heard some vinegar-cleaning miracles and even some skepticism, partly because of the distinct smell. While vinegar is most effective when used full strength... it's not always safe* for certain surfaces and its smell isn't always desirable. Which is why we dilute it a little and add other elements to still give our cleaner a powerful punch that says goodbye to germs!

*you shouldn't use vinegar on granite or marble counter tops as the acidic nature of vinegar can ruin them.

BAKING SODA // A deodorizer and natural brightener + abrasive.

Ah baking soda... from deodorizing our refrigerators to brushing our teeth. Baking soda is great at getting some of those more stubborn (and stinky) places squeaky clean! Seriously... my shower has never looked better!

OLIVE OIL // Natural wood conditioner.

We love using olive oil to condition our wood furniture and give it a nice shine! Plus, adding a little fresh lemon juice or lemon essential oil gives it a fresh scent as well as cleaning power. Check out this article by apartment therapy on other great ways to use olive oil around the house!

ESSENTIAL OILS // Natural fragrance with antifungal and antibacterial properties.

That element with a powerful punch I was talking about earlier... ESSENTIAL OILS! In addition to the wonderful natural scent they add, they also boast antifungal and antibacterial properties. Using essential oils in your home cleaning is simple and you can easily customize your blends to make your home smell just the way you want! Some of our favorites are lemon, orange, tea tree, rosemary, and our immune support blend.

The Kitchen

All Purpose Cleaner

1/2 cup vinegar

1 1/2 cups water

30 drops essential oils

Add vinegar and essential oils to a 16 oz glass spray bottle and shake to combine. Top off with water (about 1 1/2 cups) and shake before each use.

Descaling Coffee Maker

1 part water

1 part vinegar

Fill carafe with equal parts water and vinegar. Pour into water chamber and run half a brew cycle. Shut off maker and let sit for1 hour. After 1 hour, finish the brew cycle and rinse carafe. Run 2 more full brew cycles with just water.

Rinse Aid

add white vinegar to rinse aid in dishwasher to keep your glasses from being cloudy and help keep your dishwasher from getting build up!

Microwave

1 cup vinegar

1 cup water

add water and vinegar to a glass bowl and microwave for 5 min. When finished carefully remove the bowl from microwave (its hot!) and now you should be able to easily wipe the microwave clean.
