Top 5 Uses
You've probably heard talk about adding grapefruit to your diet to help loose weight. Grapefruit has been featured in several studies that test this theory. One group of researchers gave a group of overweight patients 1/2 of a fresh grapefruit and a placebo capsule 3 times a day before each meal for 12 weeks and compared them with a control group given a placebo capsule. At the end of the test period, the fresh grapefruit group had lost 1.6kg (which is about 3.5lbs) compared to the control group losing .3kg in weight (about .66lbs).
Impressive for a piece of fruit... but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to eat 1 1/2 grapefruits every day to get benefits! Everything in moderation. Over time, you can over-saturate your body with citrus which can cause other issues - which is where using grapefruit essential oil can come in handy.
The secret is limonene.
Research suggests that limonene, the most abundant chemical that makes up grapefruit, is key to the fruit's success in weight loss.
Another study looked at how the scent of grapefruit oil affected rats by enhancing lipolysis - how your body breaks down fat when it needs to create energy. Grapefruit aroma, mainly through its chemical component limonene, excited the rats' sympathetic nerve which stimulated certain fat tissues and helped reduce appetite and body weight.
Pro Tip: When looking for a good quality Grapefruit oil check the GCMS reports for its limonene content! Good quality grapefruit oils (cold pressed) range between 86% and 95% limonene content.
Grapefruit helps shed excess water weight (another bonus for weightloss;), functions as a diuretic, and boosts the lymphatic system - which is great news if you need to help your body flush out toxin buildup.
Not only does it stimulate lymph flow, it has a cleansing effect on the kidneys, liver and gallbladder (The Complete Guide for Aromatherapy & Essential Oils). This helps the body detox and get clean so it can perform and function at its best!
We often describe anything citrus as "refreshing". Just think lemonade and fresh oranges ;). Grapefruits are no different! Like all citrus oils, Grapefruit has a bright and energizing aroma.
That's (again) due to the fruit's chemical makeup. Some of the compounds in Pink Grapefruit help stimulate and energize the mind, reduce fear, manage stress and act as an antidepressant. Diffusing or directly inhaling grapefruit essential oil can help your body relax and naturally lower blood pressure (Dr. Axe).
Grapefruit is FULL of antioxidants. You've probably heard of antioxidants before - they're what roam through your body and protect your cells from free radicals. These free radicals are a result of oxidation and are caused by anything from normal body functions to environmental toxins you're exposed to. Free radicals damage your body's cells and may be linked to several diseases (like heart disease and cancer).
Using Grapefruit essential oil can add a boost of antioxidants to you skin (were many free radicals are absorbed!). So definitely think about adding it to your favorite night cream! Or get it's benefits in our Anti-Aging Face Oil! And again, limonene comes into play - this time for your skin!
Dr. Axe mentions some of its studied benefits in a helpful article (check it out here) like fighting tumors and preventing cancer by guarding your body's cells and DNA strands from damage.
Grapefruit also works as an astringent and helps to reduce the appearance of blemishes. Look at the end of this post for some tips on how our aromatherapist's use grapefruit for the skin regimes!
As a citrus oil, Grapefruit makes an excellent natural cleaner. Its antibacterial and immune supportive properties help kill bacteria, reduce ordors and freshen the air. Try diffusing it or adding several drops to your favorite vinegar based cleaning spray!
